The Wisconsin Medical Society accreditation program functions under the authority of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). Representatives from the American Board of Medical Specialties, American Medical Association, Association for Hospital Medical Education, Association of American Medical Colleges, American Hospital Association, Federation of State Medical Boards, and the Council of Medical Specialty Societies comprise the ACCME.

The Council on Continuing Medical Education currently reviews and accredits 30 hospitals, three multi-institution systems, seven specialty societies, one professional organization, and two county medical societies in Wisconsin. Information is available from Stephanie Taylor at the Wisconsin Medical Society.

AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ Activities

Accredited providers may designate the following types of activities for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ . All activities must comply with the AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ requirements detailed previously. In addition:

  • Providers should be aware of those activities that are available to physicians on a direct credit basis; i.e., providers do not designate them for credit, physicians claim the credit directly from the AMA.
  • Accredited providers do not designate activities for AMA PRA Category 2 Credit™.
Types of Activities:
  • Live activities
  • Enduring materials
  • Journal-based CME
  • Test item writing
  • Manuscript review (for journals)
  • Performance improvement
  • Internet point of care learning (PoC)
For more information on these types of activities or AMA PRA Category 2 Credit™, click here.

Physician CME Requirements in the State of Wisconsin AMA Category 1 Credit™

Physicians (MDs or DOs) licensed in the State of Wisconsin are required by the State Medical Examining Board (MEB) to obtain thirty (30) AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ or AOA credits every biennium. This biennium cycle is from January 1, even years to December 31, odd years. Physicians are required to sign an attestation statement with license renewal stating they have obtained these 30 credits. Approximately 5% of all licensed physicians will be randomly audited to provide documentation of the credits earned. The MEB suggests physicians keep copies of all attendance certificates for at least the last two years. To contact the MEB, please refer to our resources page. NOTE: If you have done 3 consecutive months of ACGME approved training between 1/1 even years – 12/31 odd years you may count this as your 30 hours of continuing education.
