The Wisconsin Medical Society’s Office of General Counsel and the Health Law Section of the State Bar of Wisconsin have teamed up to offer this unique one-day, four-session educational program.

Morning Sessions: 8:30–11:45 a.m.

Health Information Boot Camp
This session will provide a quick update on the ever-changing federal and state health information privacy laws, then jump into some of the most challenging use and disclosure issues health care professionals face. A panel of speakers from a range of backgrounds will tackle frequently asked questions and discuss best practices for handling health information in an array of contexts.

Thorny Issues in Health Care Settings
A panel of speakers will navigate through some the most dif¬ficult issues that health care entities encounter. Speakers will share their experiences and offer tips and helpful hints on topics such as:
  • “Breaking up” with a patient: More than a Post-it® note is necessary
  • Happy family minus one: What to do when a physician leaves
  • Parents vs. minors: Confidentiality, consent and confusion
  • Runaway health information: Medical identity theft and breaches

Afternoon Sessions: 1–4 p.m.

Oops, We’re Not in Compliance: Now What?
This session will focus on how the criminal, civil and administrative arenas interact in seeking compliance with various health laws and regulations. It will also address the dynamics of self-disclosure when noncompliance is discovered. A panel of speakers with different perspectives will offer valuable insight and tools for health organizations.

Risks and Pitfalls of Prescribing Controlled Substances
This session will feature a panel discussion about the regulatory and professional risks associated with the prescribing of narcotic pain medication. Representatives of health care professionals, regulatory investigators and prosecutors, and defense counsel will discuss both the bright and gray lines inherent in a chronic pain management practice and share best practice recommendations for managing patients with drug-seeking behavior. Learn the focus of regulatory initiatives, how to guard against diversion and how to protect your decision-making from subsequent investigation.
