2009 Grant Program

The deadline for grant applications for 2009 programs has passed. Check back for future deadlines.

The Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation (the Foundation) focuses on providing support for physician-led, community-based programs to improve health through education and outreach. We will support primarily short-term, high-impact, high visibility programs with preference given to initiatives that promote controllable (modifiable) lifestyle choices affecting health, are ultimately self-sustaining if multi-year, promote collaborations/partnerships, incorporate principles of public health and focus on prevention.

The Foundation gives preference to those programs that include a letter of recommendation from a Wisconsin Medical Society member and/or direct involvement of Wisconsin Medical Society member. The letter of reference should confirm the importance of the community needs to be addressed in the proposal, as well as credentials of the individuals and organizations involved.

The Foundation currently holds some funds, which must be used for a more restricted purpose. These include:

Henry A. and Irene S. Anderson Fund: Approximately $15,000 is available to address significant health care challenges through physician and/or patient education grounded in current outcomes research. A past recipient of this award has been Safe Communities for their initiative Reducing Falls in Dane County.

L. Wayne and Marion Brown Family Practice Fund: Approximately $5,500 is available to support/encourage Family Practice. This may include, but is not limited to: research or education designed to encourage medical students to pursue Family Practice, programs to support Family Practice physicians’ satisfaction, and initiatives to encourage Family Practice physicians to practice in areas of current or projected shortage.

Other funds available are less restrictive.

Applications are reviewed by the Grant Committee, whose membership includes:

  • John Petersen, MD, Chair
  • David Falk, MD
  • Sandra Osborn, MD
  • Ayaz Samadani, MD
  • Linda Syth, COO, Wisconsin Medical Society
  • James Riordan, CEO, WPS Health Insurance

Eileen Wilson, Program Coordinator, staffs the Grant Committee.
