2016 Foundation Grant Recipients

The Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation is pleased to announce grant awards for the following 2016 projects:

Allis Elementary School
School garden
Providing water for cleaning and cooking veggies, and for watering the nearby orchard.

Antigo High School
Project Green Leaf
Purchase equipment necessary to establish a school garden including: materials for construction of raised garden beds on school grounds, seeds for fruit and vegetable plants, and data recording equipment for measuring garden yield.
Award $2000

Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Foundation
Reach Out and Read Wisconsin
Purchase 4,000+ books for 16 clinics in 13 counties.
Award $10,000 (funding from 2015 annual event donations)

Columbus Community Hospital, Inc.
Project CLEAN
Preventing future narcotic dependency by presenting at local high schools and communities on the dangerous and risks of abusing narcotics; development and implementation of a therapeutic tapering program; and presenting to other providers of the programs findings.

Fox Prairie Elementary School
Outdoor Classroom Garden
Encourage integration of garden produce into the lunch and snack program.
Award $2000

Galesville Elementary School
School garden
Build a micro-farm cart for indoor plant production; purchase irrigation materials for our existing hoop house in our school garden; build a raised water tank platform; and purchase additional hand tools.

Memorial Medical Center
Behavioral and Mental Health Outreach Program
Start a formal behavioral and mental health program that will include Psychiatric care as well as outreach to our community and students.
Award $6000 (funding from the Charles W. Landis, MD Endowment)

Safe Communities Madison and Dane County
Opioid Addiction Recovery Interventions in the Emergency Room
Pilot a project to combat our drug overdose epidemic.
Award $7500

Sparta Area School District

Coordinate and supply for nutrition and literacy activities.

Tri 4 Schools
Exercise to Achievement
Help kids in elementary and middle schools train to complete a triathlon while developing healthy habits that can be applied inside and outside the classroom.

Wisconsin Literacy, Inc., Wisconsin Health Literacy division
Enhancing Child Health and Parent Confidence through Improved Health Literacy
Increase parents’ health literacy by providing What To Do When Your Child Gets Sick books to patients with young children at medical clinics served by Reach Out and Read.

Wisconsin Literacy, Inc., Wisconsin Health Literacy Division
Let’s Talk About Medicines
Educational workshops to adults about understanding and acting on medication label information.
Award $5000

Wisconsin Medical Society
Innovations in Health Care—A Quality Improvement & Research Forum
Sponsor an Innovations in Health Care forum. A submission of abstracts for oral and poster presentation will be solicited from Society members.
Award $9550 (funding from the Henry A. and Irene S. Anderson Fund)

Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation (WWHF)
Engaging Faith Communities and Medical Students in Advance Care Planning
Train faith leaders, parish nurses, and medical students as advance care planning (ACP) facilitators, and create an ongoing learning community to support them in engaging their communities in the process of ACP.

YMCA
Helping Rural Wisconsin Walk with Ease: A La Crosse Medical Neighborhood Collaboration
Piloting an evidenced-based physical activity and self-management program for adults with arthritis.
Award $6445 (partial funding from the James and Clara Joss Trust)
