ALT-004: Dietary Supplements

Dietary Supplements: The Wisconsin Medical Society (Society) supports efforts to educate physicians on:

  1. The facts regarding the mislabeling, contamination, and adulteration of supplements;
  2. The evidence or lack thereof for the safety and efficacy of most supplements; and
  3. How to access the few current reliable sources of information about them.

The Society believes that physicians could serve their patients better by knowing about the very successful, massive lobbying efforts of the dietary supplement industry that aim to prevent any increase in the Federal Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) ability to oversee the industry, and about the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994 which severely weakened the FDA’s ability to regulate supplements. The Society supports efforts to give the FDA powers and funding to effectively oversee the manufacturing, marketing, and sale of dietary supplements. (HOD, 0414)
