DRU-017: Pain Management

Pain Management: The Wisconsin Medical Society recognizes the important benefits of effective pain management and strongly encourages Wisconsin physicians to make pain assessment and management an integral part of the care of all patients. The Society:

  • Supports legislation that removes barriers to effective pain control in education programs that dispel the myths which account for the inadequate treatment of pain.
  • Supports efforts to assure proper reimbursement for pain management in working with the Medical Examining Board to ensure uniform standards of practice for responsible pain management.
  • Opposes legal actions against physicians who prescribe opioids and other controlled substances to patients with terminal illness according to standard medical practice. Physicians who follow principles of practice for the use of opioids, and patients whom they treat, should not be encumbered by inappropriate scrutiny upon their practice. (HOD, 0418)
