PQRS deadline extended to Friday

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has extended the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) registration deadline to Friday, October 18. Medical groups of 100 or more physicians and other eligible professionals that did not engage in group participation in PQRS in 2013 must register by Friday to avoid a 1 percent Value-based Modifier penalty on Medicare payments in 2015. This deadline does not apply to eligible professionals in groups less than 100 who report PQRS via claims, registry or EHR.

This penalty would be in addition to a 1.5 percent payment decrease for all physicians who did not participate in PQRS as an individual or as part of a group. To avoid these penalties, physicians in groups of 100 or more should ensure that their group is registered for one of the PQRS group participation options.

Note that registration is not required for group practices that participate in the Medicare Shared Savings Program or for physicians in group practices that only practice in a Rural Health Clinic, Federally Qualified Health Center or in a Critical Access Hospital (using method II billing). Additionally, individual physicians and those in groups of less than 100 physicians and eligible providers are not subject to the Value-based Modifier penalty now.
