The August, 2014 issue of Scientific American magazine features an article by past Society President Darold Treffert, MD, titled “Accidental Genius.” In the article, Dr. Treffert explores recent findings on the acquired savant—a condition wherein hidden artistic or intellectual gifts are sometimes unmasked by a blow to the head.

A psychiatrist at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, Dr. Treffert is internationally known for his expertise on savant syndrome. Additional information about the article, as well as a video of a talk Dr. Treffert gave in 2011 on acquired savantism and other forms of the condition can be accessed here.
