The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) developed the Open Payments Program to comply with the Physician Payments Sunshine Act (Sunshine Act). This requires CMS to publicly report data on items of value that are given to physicians and teaching hospitals on an annual basis. Click here for information and resources about the Open Payments Program that are specific to physicians.
Physicians are now able to register in the Open Payments System and review their 2014 calendar year data. The official 45-day review and dispute period is April 6 to May 20. Disputes initiated during this period will be flagged in the public release on June 30. Click here for step-by-step instructions on how to register and review Open Payments data.
WMJ has published two articles regarding the Sunshine Act and what it means for physicians. The first article addresses inclusion in the reporting database and the second article focuses on what and how to report. The final Sunshine Act rule is available here.
Physicians are encouraged to e-mail comments about their registration experience to the AMA, which will use responses in their ongoing advocacy efforts.
