WPA fall conference on addiction to focus on opiate epidemic

The Opiate and Heroin Epidemic is the focus of the Wisconsin Psychiatric Association (WPA) 2015 Fall Conference on Addiction. Being held Oct. 15-16 at the Milwaukee Marriott Downtown, the event will explore the breadth of the problem and collaborate efforts to halt the epidemic given the troubling rise in overdose deaths from heroin across Wisconsin and the nation.

The conference will open with a presentation by Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel (invited) Oct. 15. Immediately after the attorney general, the Medical Society of Milwaukee is sponsoring a private screening of “The Hungry Heart,” followed by a question-and-answer session moderated by the movie’s director/producer Bess O’Brien.

Sessions on Oct. 16 will cover viewpoints of the epidemic from addiction specialists, a representative from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s office, legislators, drug court officials, the Medical Examining Board and more.
