The hardship exception applications for the Medicare Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program are due July 1.
Eligible professionals may apply for a hardship exception if they have not successfully met meaningful use (MU) for an EHR reporting period in 2015. In February, CMS issued FAQ #14357, which clarifies the hardship exception for meaningful use for the EHR Incentive Program.
CMS has stated that it will broadly accept hardship exemptions because of the delayed publication of the program regulations. Applying for the hardship will not prevent a physician from earning an incentive. It simply protects a physician from receiving a MU penalty.
CMS has a number of resources, FAQs and additional information available on its website, and the American Medical Association created step-by-step instructions to assist physicians. Read more in this Medigram article.
