The Medical Society of Milwaukee Foundation (MSMF) kicked off the farmer’s market season with a $21,481 donation to Hunger Task Force and Fondy Food Center, two local organizations that provide healthy, nutritious food to the underserved. Each organization received a check for $10,741 on May 19, at an event held at Fondy Farmer’s Market, Milwaukee.
“The link between good health and food is perhaps nowhere more apparent than in low-income communities, where access to affordable, healthy produce is limited and rates of diabetes, heart disease, and other diet-related illnesses are high,” said Kathy Schmitz, executive director of the Medical Society of Milwaukee County (MSMC).
MSMC President Michelle Graham added, “As physician leaders deeply committed to our community’s health, we are honored to support Hunger Task Force and Fondy Food Center and their mission to provide healthy, nutritious food for those in need. Good health starts with good nutrition.”
The funds were raised during the MSMC’s 2018 Awards Dinner on March 3. Nearly 300 physicians, health care, business and civic leaders, and community members attended the event, which recognized exceptional community leaders whose efforts focus on critical issues facing the community, such as poverty and hunger.
