State Assembly approves step therapy bill, sends to governor

The Wisconsin State Assembly Tuesday afternoon approved a Society-supported bill that clarifies health insurance company procedures related to “step therapy.” Senate Bill 26, authored by Rep. John Nygren (R-Marinette) and Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills), establishes clearer requirements insurers must follow when they create a step therapy protocol and requires certain exceptions to be granted when a prescriber submits complete, clinically relevant written documentation supporting the patient’s request.

The full State Senate approved the bill on June 5; Tuesday’s Assembly concurrence means the bill now heads to Governor Tony Evers’ desk for final action.
