Improve the health of the people of Wisconsin by supporting and strengthening physicians' ability to practice high-quality patient care in a changing environment.

Future physician advocates on behalf of Wisconsin kids

On Wednesday University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health student and Society member Anna Heffron met with key staff from the Department of Children and Families (DCF) to advocate for children in the foster care system. The meeting stems from this year’s House of Delegates when the Dane County Medical Society and the Medical Students Section put forth Resolution 104: Support for Requiring Investigations into Deaths of Children in Foster Care.

The Resolution was referred to the Council on Legislation which then directed staff to set up a meeting with DCF to learn more about the state’s foster care system and how the Society can be a partner and resource.

The meeting between the Society and DCF was very productive and beneficial as DCF shared its datasets and reports while the Society asked questions about where there may be gaps in DCF policy that the Society could help fill.

Wednesday’s meeting is a great example of how physicians at any stage of their career can have a meaningful impact on policy and outcomes at all levels of health care.
